I programmed my analog hardware synths and digital virtual synths to mimic some of my favorite old school synth sounds. At the heart of the process was inconsistencies.
Inconsistencies of pitch, timbre, and timing. I ran multiple samples of each synth patch I created through various compressors, saturators, frequency shifters, and even recorded many of them directly to cassette tape, before resampling them into Ableton Live. Once inside of Live, I used the Sampler to build multi-sampled instruments, and placed them into Instrument Racks loaded with effects.
